David O. Godwin, Jr

A former Workers' Compensation Commissioner, Mr. Godwin has almost 30 years of experience in insurance claims and civil litigation. Mr. Godwin began his career as a claims investigator with Equifax Services. He was employed as a property and casualty claims representative for the CNA Insurance Company (1978-1982) and a staff attorney for the Royal Insurance Company (1982-1986). A 1977 graduate of the American University with a BA in Political Science, Mr. Godwin is a member of the National Honor Societies for Political Science and Public Administration. While working as a claim representative, he attended the Antioch and Potomac Schools of Law receiving his JD in 1982. He began the private practice of law in 1987 with the Rockville firm Donohue, Ehrmantraut and Montedonico and stayed with the group until establishing Godwin & Hickey in February 2002, concentrating on complex civil litigation and workers' compensation defense. A member of the District of Columbia Bar (1982) and the Maryland Bar (1983), Mr. Godwin is a member of the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals, 4th Circuit, theUnited States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, theUnited States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Tax Court, theUnited States Court of Claims, theUnited States District Court of Maryland,the United Stated District Court for the District of Columbia, theDistrict of Columbia Court of Appealsand theMaryland Court of Appeals. A frequent speaker and writer on risk management, insurance, workers' compensation and employment issues; Mr. Godwin has been selected to be in Who's Who in American Law and The International Who's Who of Professionals. Active in his community, he has served on several Boards for nonprofit organizations including the American Red Cross, Frederick Chapter and Lions Club of Frederick. Mr. Godwin is a member on the Board of Directors for Kids’ Chance of Maryland, Inc. He also served the citizens of Maryland as a member of the JAG Corp. in the Maryland Defense Force. Michael H. Daney

Mr. Daney  is an AV rated trial attorney and focuses his practices on defending employers, insurance carriers, self-insured entities and government entities in connection with general liability, workers’ compensation, employment and OSHA claims and handles all phases of litigation, including administrative hearings, motions, discovery, mediations, jury trials and appeals in Maryland and the District of Columbia. Mr. Daney also represents small business owners with a wide variety of legal services from organizing a business entity to drafting and negotiating contracts, and general legal counsel as to other legal issues. Mr. Daney is a graduate of the University of Delaware, with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and received a J.D. from the University of Kentucky School of Law. Mr. Daney was an Associate and Partner at the Baltimore firm of Lord & Whip, P.A. and stayed with the group until establishing Godwin, Erlandson & Daney, LLC in January of 2008. Mr. Daney is a member of the District of Columbia Bar, Maryland Bar, United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit, United States District Court of Maryland, and the Harford County Bar Association. Mr. Daney is also a member of the Maryland Defense Counsel, Inc., Maryland Self-Insurer and Employers Compensation Association, Baltimore Claims Association and Washington Claims Association. A frequent speaker and writer on insurance, workers’ compensation and employment issues, Mr. Daney presented seminars on Evidence in Maryland (2012), and Building Your Civil Trial Skills (2011), and multiple presentations on Workers’ Compensation. Mr. Daney is the co-author of Applying the Rules of Evidence: What Every Attorney Needs to Know             (NBI Seminar 2012), and Legal Issues in the Maryland Horse Industry (2002-2013). Mr. Daney is an active leader and participant in a variety of community activities including the Baltimore Rotary Club (President 2005-2006, President-Elect 2004-2005, Vice President 2003-2004, Director 2000-2002); Founding Member of the Darlington Dublin Community Association (President 1998 to 1999), and the Dublin Darlington Community Council (Chairperson 2002 to 2007) Mr. Daney currently serves as Chairman of the Harford County Personnel Advisory Board and also serves as the Assistant Zoning Hearing Examiner for the Harford County Council. William H. Schladt

A native of Maryland and current Annapolitan, Mr. Schladt has thirty years of experience in civil litigation, including insurance defense, workers compensation, real estate litigation and estate management and planning.  Mr. Schladt began his career in 1982 with the Bethesda law firm of Weinstein, Pitterich and Snedegar, handling jury and non-jury insurance defense and general litigation.  In 1988, Mr. Schladt began practicing with the law firm of Ward & Klein, Chartered, where he was a partner until 2011.  A graduate of the George Washington University with high honors and a BS in Political Science and Philosophy, Mr. Schladt attended the George Washington University Law School receiving his JD in 1982.  Mr. Schladt has first chair experience in jury trials concerning complex civil litigation in such diverse areas as workers’ compensation defense, premises liability, products liability, auto liability, employment discrimination, and will contests.  A member of the Maryland Bar (1982), the District of Columbia Bar (1983), and the Virginia Bar (1996), Mr. Schladt is a member of the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States District Court of Maryland, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the Maryland Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Virginia. Mr. Schladt is a member of Maryland Defense Counsel, Inc.; Maryland Self-Insured Employers Compensation Association; Baltimore Claims Association, Washington Claims Association and the Association of Compensation Insurance Attorneys. Ashlee K. Smith

B.A., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2003); J.D., cum laude, University of Baltimore (2006).  In 2006 Ms. Smith’s comment Vice-a-Verdict: Legally Inconsistent Jury Verdicts Should Not Stand in Maryland was published by the University of Baltimore Law Review.  The comment was later cited by the Maryland Court of Appeals in its seminal decision in Price v. State, 405 Md. 10 (2008), which reversed many years of precedent and held that legally inconsistent jury verdicts in criminal cases were no longer permissible.  Prior to joining the firm in 2011, Ms. Smith worked for a private insurance defense firm for four years.  Currently, she concentrates her practice on the defense of workers’ compensation claims, general liability cases, and insurance coverage disputes.  Ms. Smith is a member of the Maryland Bar Association (2007) and has served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Compensation Insurance Attorneys since 2014.  Ms. Smith is admitted to the bar of Maryland (2007) and the District of Columbia (2012).  Email: smith@GEVDLaw.com

 

Sheryl A. Tirocchi

Ms. Tirocchi concentrates her practice on the defense of workers’ compensation and general liability matters in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. She attended Villa Julie College and earned her J.D., summa cum laude, from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Prior to joining Godwin, Erlandson & Daney, LLC, she served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Althea M. Handy, who is now the Judge-in-Charge of the Civil Division in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City.  Ms. Tirocchi is admitted to the bars of Maryland (2011), Virginia (2012) and the District of Columbia (2013) and is a member of the Maryland Bar Association, Virginia Bar Association, Northern Virginia Claims Association, and the Association of Compensation Insurance Attorneys. Joseph C. Veith, III

Mr. Veith focuses his practice on workers’ compensation, employment law, appellate advocacy and civil litigation in Virginia federal and state courts and in the District of Columbia.  He attended Wheeling College and received a J.D. from George Mason University School of Law.  Prior to joining Godwin, Erlandson and Daney, Mr. Veith served as Principal at the law firm of Montedonico, Hamilton & Altman and Of Counsel at Bancroft, McGavin, Horvath & Judkins.  He is a member of the Virginia (1980) and District of Columbia (1981) bars and is admitted to the following courts: U.S. Court of Appeals, 4th Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Virginia Supreme Court, Virginia Court of Appeals, and District of Columbia Court of Appeals.  Mr. Veith is a member of the Virginia Bar Association, Fairfax Bar Association, District of Columbia Bar, and Northern Virginia Defense Lawyers Association.  He has contributed to a number of lectures, seminars, and publications regarding Workers’ Compensation law in Virginia and the District of Columbia.  Email: veith@GEVDLaw.com

James A. Turner

B.A., Northeastern University (2005); J.D., cum laude, American University Washington College of Law (2011).  Prior to joining Godwin, Erlandson & Daney, Mr. Turner served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Steven G. Fatima H. Garland

B.A., University of Virginia (2003); J.D., Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University (2006).  Ms. Garland began her career as an Assistant Public Defender with the Montgomery County Office of the Public Defender.  She has been in the private practice of law since 2012.  She has litigated and tried numerous jury trials, bench trials, hearings and appeals.  Ms. Garland is a member of the Maryland Bar Association (2006) and the Montgomery County Bar Association (2012).  She has a certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution (2006) and is admitted to the bars of Maryland (2006) and the District of Columbia (2013).
